Why Office 365 Stops Saving Documents Automatically

Office 365 AutoSave depends on multiple factors β€” OneDrive sync, cloud storage permissions, file location, and your Office account status. AutoSave may stop working due to:

  • OneDrive not running or paused
  • File stored on local PC instead of OneDrive
  • Multiple Office accounts conflicting
  • Office not activated or license expired
  • Damaged Office installation files
  • Network interruptions
  • Corrupted OneDrive cache

Let’s fix it step by step.

Fix 1 β€” Ensure the File is Saved in OneDrive

AutoSave only works when your document is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.

Check the top left corner of Word/Excel:

  • If you see β€œSaved Locally” β€” AutoSave will NOT work.
  • If you see OneDrive – Personal/Business β€” AutoSave should work.

How to Move a Local File to OneDrive:

  1. Click File β†’ Save As
  2. Select OneDrive – Personal or OneDrive – Business
  3. Save and turn ON the AutoSave toggle

Fix 2 β€” Turn ON AutoSave Manually

Sometimes Office disables AutoSave by default.

At the top-left of Word/Excel:

Toggle AutoSave β†’ ON

Fix 3 β€” Check If OneDrive Sync Is Paused

  1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar
  2. Make sure it does NOT say β€œPaused”
  3. If paused, click Resume Syncing

Fix 4 β€” Sign in to the Correct Office Account

Many users are logged in with two accounts unknowingly (work + personal).

Check this:
  1. Open Word β†’ File β†’ Account
  2. Sign out of all accounts
  3. Sign in ONLY with the account linked to your Office subscription

Fix 5 β€” Update OneDrive to Latest Version

An outdated OneDrive client breaks AutoSave.

Download OneDrive Update

Fix 6 β€” Reset OneDrive (Most Powerful Fix)

This rebuilds the OneDrive database and solves 90% sync errors.

Run this command:

onedrive.exe /reset

Then reopen OneDrive.

Fix 7 β€” Repair Office Installation

Corrupted Office files often break AutoSave.

  1. Press Windows + R and type appwiz.cpl
  2. Select Microsoft Office
  3. Click Modify β†’ Quick Repair

If still broken, run Online Repair.

Fix 8 β€” Enable AutoSave in Office Settings

Sometimes AutoSave is disabled in global settings.

  1. File β†’ Options β†’ Save
  2. Enable:
  • AutoSave files stored in the Cloud
  • Save AutoRecover information every 5 minutes

Fix 9 β€” Check Storage Quota Issues

If your OneDrive storage is full:

  • AutoSave will turn off automatically
  • Uploads will fail

Fix 10 β€” Reinstall OneDrive

If AutoSave still fails, reinstall OneDrive completely.

  1. Go to Settings β†’ Apps
  2. Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive
  3. Restart your PC
  4. Install again
